1 How to properly care for a bouquet?
Receiving a bouquet of flowers is always incredibly pleasant, but sometimes the next day the flowers lose their fresh look. It’s not a very pleasant situation, so to prevent this from happening, we have prepared a few simple and effective tips on how to properly care for a bouquet to keep it fresh for as long as possible.
Instructions for caring for a bouquet:
Remove the packaging from the bouquet
No matter how beautiful the packaging of the bouquet is, before placing the bouquet in a vase, it is advisable to remove it, as it is needed to protect the delicate flower buds during transportation. Sometimes the packaging can hinder the normal consumption of water.
Remove all leaves that may come into contact with the water in the vase
It is necessary to remove the leaves from the bouquet that could theoretically end up in the water. Leaves can contaminate the water in the vase.
Trim the stems at a 45-degree angle
Before placing the flowers in water, it is necessary to trim them. The stems should be cut with a sharp knife or secateurs at a 45-degree angle. This will prevent the flower vessels from becoming clogged with air. Plants should be cut a couple of centimeters above the previous cut. The angled cut will increase the surface area for liquid absorption, and the flower will receive better nutrition. However, if we are talking about tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, we cut them with a straight cut and a sharp knife. The cut should be refreshed with each water change, as flowers tend to “seal” when in contact with air, thus limiting water intake.
It is better to use a sharp knife or secateurs for trimming, as after using ordinary scissors, there are traces of their deformation on the stems, which leads to the destruction of the capillaries, resulting in worse water absorption by the flower.
Wash the vase
The vase for the bouquet must be clean. This is necessary to prevent the appearance of bacteria that contribute to the wilting and decay of the flower stems. Washing the vase is necessary every time the water is changed.
Also, pay attention to the size of the vase. The minimum volume for an average mixed bouquet should not be less than 1-1.5 liters. You can clarify with the florist the desirable amount of water for certain flowers. For example, hyacinths, tulips, amaryllis, callas do not need a large amount of water. The stems of roses, hydrangeas, astilbes, on the contrary, should be at least halfway in the water.
Fill the vase with clean, cool water
The water should be clean and cool to keep the flowers fresh for as long as possible.
Add special flower food to the water
We always provide a packet with a substance that will prolong the life of the flower to our bouquets. Why do we recommend using flower food? Because when we cut the flower, we deprive them of water, nutrients, and growth hormone. All of this they get from the so-called “mother plant”. Fertilizer lowers the pH level, stimulates water and nutrient intake, and also prevents bacteria from multiplying.
Place the bouquet in a cool place with fresh air flow
An ideal place for the bouquet would be a cool place with a fresh air flow. Make sure the bouquet is away from drafts, direct sunlight, and sources of heat (fireplaces, radiators). It is not advisable to place the bouquet in the kitchen, as flowers do not like noise, which includes the operation of appliances and their radiation. It is worth noting that it is better not to place the bouquet next to a basket of fruits or vegetables, as they emit a large amount of ethylene, which negatively affects the quality of cut flowers. Quality care for the bouquet will help to preserve its freshness and beauty for a long time.
2 How to properly care for a composition in a box?
Compositions in velvet boxes are popular among our customers, they look very impressive. However, to maintain the freshness and beauty of such a composition, we will share care rules that will allow the composition to delight you or your loved ones for as long as possible.
The main difference between a composition in a box and a bouquet is the presence of floristic foam, which is pre-soaked in water and retains a certain amount of moisture, which helps the flowers placed in it to consume the necessary amount of water, but at the same time prevents them from rotting from excess liquid and the action of bacteria.
Placement of the floral composition
• Place the box with flowers away from possible drafts, heaters, and direct sunlight.
• Do not leave the composition on the windowsill and in the kitchen, these places are least favorable for flowers.
• Close proximity to fruits and vegetables is detrimental to flowers, try to place the floral composition away from them.
Proper and timely watering
• Monitor the condition of the floristic foam, it should always be slightly moist.
• You can water the floral composition using a watering can with a thin spout. Water slowly so that it has time to absorb.
• The amount of water depends on the size of the composition: small – 30 ml, medium – 50-100 ml, large – 100-150 ml, king size – 250 ml.
• Try to avoid getting water on the leaves and buds of the plants, as they may start to rot.
• If you notice fallen leaves and petals on the foam, remove them to prevent bacteria from getting on the stems and prolong the life of the flowers.
Not recommended:
• Independently pulling flowers out of the floristic foam and moving them to another location. When you pull out the flower stem from the oasis, it immediately aerates and the flower quickly fades.
• Spraying flower buds with water will also shorten their lifespan.
By following these simple recommendations, the flowers will remain fresh and will delight you for a long time!
