FRESHNESS INSTRUCTION
Receiving a bouquet of flowers is always a great pleasure, but sometimes the flowers lose their fresh appearance the next day. To avoid such a situation and extend the life of the arrangement, we have prepared a few simple and effective tips on properly caring for a bouquet to keep it fresh for as long as possible.
Bouquet care instructions:
Step I: Remove the bouquet’s packaging
Although the bouquet’s packaging may be beautiful, removing it before placing it in a vase is recommended, as it is designed to protect the delicate flower buds during transport. Sometimes the packaging can hinder the flowers from absorbing water.
Step II: Remove all leaves that may touch the water in the vase
It is necessary to remove the leaves from the bouquet that could theoretically end up in the water. Leaves can contaminate the water in the vase.
Step III: Trim the stems at a 45-degree angle
Before placing the flowers in water, it’s essential to trim them. The stems should be cut with a sharp knife or pruners at a 45-degree angle. This type of cut prevents the flower’s vessels from becoming clogged with air. The plants should be trimmed a few centimeters above the previous cut. An angled cut increases the stem’s absorption surface, allowing the flowers to better take in water and nutrients.
It is recommended to use a sharp knife or pruners for cutting, as regular scissors can leave marks of deformation on the stems, leading to damage to the vessels and hindering the flowers’ ability to absorb water.
*For tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths, the stems should be cut straight across using a sharp knife. The cut should be refreshed with each water change, as these flowers tend to “seal” themselves when exposed to air, which restricts the flow of water.
What else you should pay attention to:
Wash the vase:
The vase for the bouquet must be clean. This is necessary to prevent the appearance of bacteria that contribute to the wilting and decay of the flower stems. Washing the vase is necessary every time the water is changed.
Also, pay attention to the size of the vase. The minimum volume for an average mixed bouquet should not be less than 1-1.5 liters. You can clarify with the florist the desirable amount of water for certain flowers. For example, hyacinths, tulips, amaryllis, callas do not need a large amount of water. The stems of roses, hydrangeas, and astilbes, on the contrary, should be at least halfway in the water.
Fill the vase with clean, cool water:
The water should be clean and cool to keep the flowers fresh for as long as possible.
Add special flower food to the water:
We always include a water-soluble powder with our bouquets that extends the flowers’ lifespan. Why is it important to use flower food? After being cut, plants lose access to water, nutrients, and growth hormones that they receive from the “mother plant.” The flower food lowers the water’s pH, stimulates the absorption of water and nutrients, and prevents bacterial growth.
Place the bouquet in a cool place with fresh air flow:
The ideal location for a bouquet is a cool place with fresh airflow. Ensure that the bouquet is kept away from drafts, direct sunlight, and heat sources (like fireplaces or radiators). It is not recommended to place the bouquet in the kitchen, where noise and radiation from appliances may negatively affect the flowers. It is also advisable to avoid placing the bouquet near a fruit or vegetable basket, as the ethylene emitted by these products can deteriorate the quality of cut flowers. Proper care of the bouquet will help preserve its freshness and beauty for longer
Arrangements in velvet boxes or baskets are very popular among our customers and look exceptionally stylish. However, to keep such arrangements fresh and beautiful for as long as possible, it is important to follow proper care instructions.
The main difference between an arrangement in a box and a bouquet is the presence of floral foam, which is pre-soaked in water. This foam retains a specific amount of moisture, which helps the flowers placed in it absorb the right amount of water. At the same time, the foam prevents the flowers from rotting due to excess liquid and bacterial activity.
Placing the Flower Arrangement:
• Place the box with flowers in a location away from drafts, radiators, and direct sunlight.
• Avoid keeping the arrangement on a windowsill or in the kitchen, as these places are less favorable for flowers.
• Keep the arrangement away from fruits and vegetables, as proximity to them can be harmful to the flowers.
Proper and Timely Watering:
• Regularly check the condition of the floral foam; it should always be slightly damp.
• Water the arrangement slowly using a watering can with a narrow spout to allow the water to be absorbed by the foam.
• The amount of water depends on the size of the arrangement: small – 30 ml, medium – 50-100 ml, large – 100-150 ml, king size – 250 ml.
• Try to avoid getting water on the leaves and buds of the plants, as this can cause them to rot.
• If you notice fallen leaves and flower petals on the foam, remove them to prevent bacterial growth and extend the freshness of the flowers.
Not recommended:
• Independently pulling flowers out of the floristic foam and moving them to another location. When you pull out the flower stem from the oasis, it immediately aerates and the flower quickly fades.
• Spraying flower buds with water will also shorten their lifespan.
By following these simple recommendations, the flowers will remain fresh and will delight you for a long time!
